For six years we toiled in our allotment, learning about organic gardening, writing for the Nelson Leader, planting, sowing, eating, growing - we were like rats running along familiar runs - one run to Asda at the end of the street, one to Nelson to pay the rent, but mostly running to the allotment. I was always aware there was another world out there. I remembered my single days when I took my bike on long tours, I dreamed of one day showing it all to Wolfram . .  I told myself there is a time and a season for everything, and this was the gardening part of my life. One day the time would be right to do other things. . .

In 1995 those 'other things' arrived. Wolfram had an insurance policy maturing in Germany, and instead of getting his mother to send it on, he thought we would make the journey and collect it ourselves - but he wanted to do it by bike! This was a huge undertaking - not least because we did not know how long we would be away, and there were debts to pay.  We economised like mad to get all our affairs straight, and even managed to pay for an alarm system for the house. We don't exactly live in the salubrious suburbs! Telling a neighbour you are going to be away can be like an open invitation to a burglar. We made the German trip in 1995. We covered 804 miles and were away six weeks. Read about it here
comoweb.jpg (18098 bytes) In 1997 we were off again to Lake Como. We planned to ride down to the coast, then go west along the French Coast through Brittany, ending up in Languedoc. But Fate decreed we should never leave the shores of the lake. Find out why here
